Oh Jennessa didn't want Vane to feel bad... Quite the contrary. She thought she saw something in him... Then again her mind reminded her that it was likely just her normal like for flirting with snakes. And that he was no different from those of his house. He wasn't going to be friendly to her, no matter how friendly and sweet she was to him. And suddenly all wish to flirt was drained out of her. It confused her greatly, typically she would go on until the Slytherin started hexing her... But somehow she didn't want to with Vane. Not for lack of interest... Oh no... But because she didn't wish to upset him? What the heck... It would hopefully remain unknown to the snake why his indifference hurt her so. But then again probably not... Nessa was too soft hearted for her own good. She wasn't in flirting mode... She found herself in trying to be a friend mode... This confused her more than anything, considering that didn't pop up much with the snakes. It didn't typically have the time... But Vane looked like someone who needed a friend... And thus sparked the compassion inside the little puff.
Jennessa wasn't entirely sure how to react to all this, and thus she did what she typically did... Withdrew to protect herself. She had to protect that soft heart right? And thus she put on her own air of indifference, not really cold like Vane's, but enough coolness that she became a little more frosty. The hurt had shown already in her eyes, but she tried her hardest to cover that up with her attempt at coldness. Enough to pull the heartstrings of even the coldest Slytherin... Oh wait, perhaps it was. But then again... Nessa didn't believe the snakes possessed heartstrings to pull. She nodded slightly at his vocalization to her words.
Jennessa searched Vane's eyes quietly for any understanding to her words, and was frusterated to find none. His next words perplexed her considerably but she nodded slowly. "It is... And every beholder is different in how he or she beholds things. But then again said beholder just might be blind to what is truly there." Oh great. More riddles and complex, vague phrases. One would bet Vane would get frusterated with this girl, and yet if he only looked at the longing in her eyes as she said it, eyes focused upon him and not the cat, he may understand... Though he wasn't given much time, as shortly after, her eyes shut and were drawn away from him as she gathered her books.
Nessa missed the disappointment in his frown as she turned around to sit at the table nearby his... And yet his words would draw her attention like the tiniest bit of attention and praise to a neglected puppy. She saw the frown on his face and surveyed it in silence, even more confusion cropping up in her mind. What in the world... Today was certainly a backwards upside down day... It took a couple seconds of her staring dumbly at him before she found her voice and realized what he had asked. "Oh! Oh... Um it's on Animagi..." She bit her lip a little and shrugged a bit. "The Professor wanted us to do a little research on the subject..." She nodded just a bit as she finished slightly lamely, looking down briefly at her parchment as she laid it out, but she was caught rather off guard by the question and the sudden hope and joy that filled her chest. Goodness the girl was on an emotional roller coaster.

If there was confusion in his eyes, Vane wasn't surprised, he had no clue as to what Jennessa was getting at, and he really didn't want to attempt to wrap his already numb head around it. His head tilted as she spoke, puzzlement and frustration growing like a weed within, but he kept his exprssion empty, hoping not to betray his incomprehension. If she would only just get to the point, and stop wasting the precious time he already was wasting away. Why do witches have to be so bloody complex all the time? If they weren't happy, you had to figure out how to fix it. If they were angry, you had to scramble about to find the reason and change it. If they were overjoyed, you had to play happy too. And, if they were sad, you had to shower affection over them, and sing praises. Sometimes it was all just too much, and Vane would find himself nearly ready to write off the whole constitution of witches.
Interestingly, Jennessa didn't write Vane totally off as he thought she might have done, and he was rather tickled he was able to win her attention back so easily. However, it took her a moment to reply, and he felt his growing frustration take a bounding leap ahead. Why was she just staring at him? It made him feel a bit uncomfortable, he couldn't help but squirm inside of his own typically confident skin. "Oh.", he commented softly, hiding his relief, as he moved his icy blue eyes from her to the page of parchment she was set to work on, and back. "I'm stuck with a bit of Charms." Vane added a shrug when he continued, and reached for his own bit of lessons to finish up.
He flicked the page out for her to see that he hadn't much left to do, and eyed her carefully. "Just a bit left, but...I guess I just lost interest." Vane's fingers released the page, allowing it to float quickly to the table between them, and he leaned over it, resting on his elbows. "Least Flitwick doesn't hand out the piles of work McGonagall does. I'd be stuck in here for days if that was the case." Of it's own accord, Vane's mouth wouldn't shut once he opened it, and he continued to spew out rubbish for conversation in the hopes of holding on to Jennessa's interest. Suddenly, his frowned vanished and was replaced by a rather charming, bright smile that quickly disappeared. "Good luck with that.", he said, nodding his head in the direction of her lessons.

It really wasn't like witches tried to be all that complex... At least not all of them, and certainly not Nessa. But she simply couldn't find the plain words to spit out what she was thinking... Then again she couldn't find any words to explain this irrational feeling inside her. Yet Nessa saw the confusion in Vane's eyes and would feel bad for it. She didn't want to confuse him either. So finally she drew a deep breath and nodded to him. "It's silly, don't give it another thought..." She shook her head a little and smiled warmly at him. In reality she didn't expect anything he thought about witches... On the contrary, she didn't want him to be anything more or less than what he was. Sure she didn't want him being broody all the time, but she couldn't change it if he were. She shook her head gently and smiled a little. "I wasn't talking about Elspeth when I said I saw something wonderful, however... She is beautiful, but the one I spoke of is more human." She nodded to him trying to be as blatant as she knew how. "But I'm certain you must hear that a lot and it is silly coming from a Puff like me."
She shrugged it off quickly, and indeed wouldn't write off Vane completely. Sure it had hit her harder than it should have that he didn't wish to be her friend, but she tried to push that feeling down hard. Nessa was very much oblivious that she was frusterating the poor wizard. And then that she was making him uncomfortable. Well she would be sorry if she realized such. But she didn't, her mind was too busy trying to catch up with the happenings. Soon enough she would speak, and he would reply with what he was doing. She leaned over to get a better look at his work and grinned brighter, that honest smile coming back in a small dose. "Charms hmm? My all time Favourite class." She was very interested to see what the work was but furrowed her brows a little bit. "We haven't studied that yet. You're a seventh year aren't you?" She tilted her head a little bit, but her heart fell a bit. Great. Out of her league again.
And yet as she scanned his work, understanding it for the most part, he continued... Before long Vane had spoke more words than he had spoke in the rest of the evening. She grinned gently and dipped her gaze. "Sorry about that... Didn't mean to steal away your attention." She wouldn't dare state that he was easily making it very difficult for her to even start her own work. Her own gentler blue eyes rose to meet his, not staring, but with warmth again. She rolled her eyes playfully and grinned a bit. "Tell me about it... Really essays on like everything we learn... At least Flitwick typically just wants us to come back and be able to perform the charms he teaches us well." She grinned a little at him and shook her head a little. "Besides... How many essays can one write on Charms... It's a bit more practical than that. Then again one could say the same for Transfiguration I would think..." And Jennessa was off agian, chatting away quite happily, her tone and mood light once again, almost lighter than the tentitave light tone used when petting Elspeth. Well done Vane. Vane had managed to pull the young witch's attention right back to himself with just a little bit of attention and conversation. Her gaze had drifted down to the cat again briefly before looking back up to meet his gaze, and just as she did, the most wonderful smile appeared on Vane's face, one to make her heart skip a beat and leap at the same time. A warm, sweet smile of her own drifted quickly to her lips, but didn't disappear when his did.
The words he spoke next directed Jennessa's attention back to her parchment and she nodded a little. "You too. I know that last few inches can always be the hardest... Especially when you've run out of things to say." Great... More double meanings in her words? Maybe not but hey... Then again it would soon be apperant that she was not out of words. "I am not so sure I'll really be able to focus though... Might have to just borrow these books and do it in the common room later." Warm smile given to him, though inwardly she berated herself. Sure she had seen him in the Great Hall and such, but she didn't know this young man in the least, what was wrong with her pitter pattering heart?

There was an usual sensation of warmth flooding Vane's cheeks when Jennessa's words reached his ears. It was rare the normally confident wizard blushed, but somehow the Hufflepuff found a way. She was right, he did hear compliments quite often and he normally took them in stride, now he felt like a spotlight was shining down on him. He couldn't help but fidget in his seat, adjusting his Slytherin robes, and as he opened his mouth to receive the compliment he found his voice wasn't working. His cheeks turned scarlet, or at least, it sure felt like they had, and he closed his mouth, pressing his lips together in a tight smile that was more a look of discomfort than anything really.
Before Vane could find his voice, however, Jennessa was busy chattering away once again, commenting on her love of Charms. He nodded, yes, he was a Seventh Year, again keeping his voice to himself. This time, though, he feared to even attempt to get a word in, for she might just keep right on babbling right over him, and his words would be drowned out. It seemed he would learn a of her opinions on the classwork they are given, and he found himself interested, not at all bored as he normally would quickly be. It would stand to reason why Vane found talking to others in his House as boring, because none were so animated as this witch. They way her face would light up while she spoke completely enraptured Vane, and his own light blue eyes would flash the occasional hint of amusement and interest as he listened.
"Mmhmm...", he agreed, risking some sort of reply as it seemed Jennessa was finally losing a bit of her steam. "I don't think I'll be as lucky. Common room's likely to be full, and that makes for poor odds on quiet for any sort of studies." Vane shrugged, not really interested in finishing in the first place, or else, he would have instantly dismissed the witch the moment her mouth opened. "Shame too, I don't know what to do with myself now. Not up for my spot in front of the fireplace, nor here in this dusty library.", he continued, the air of boredom returning, and settling uncomfortably on his shoulders.
(OCC: Haha! Thanks! =] That's nice to hear.)

Jennessa felt like she was walking on thin ice... Butterflies flitted around her belly. She saw the pink on his cheeks, though it was rather warm in the Library... Sort of. But yea, that must be it. Surely! Vane couldn't be blushing... Blushing because of her... Her compliment was not forced but it didn't sound exactly natural either. Yet it was very true. Every word of it. Maybe a little sudden... But true. Nessa smiled warmly at him but finally moved her gaze away from him, and scooted back to her chair. His fidgeting made her grin just a little. But she pretended like she didn't notice, straightening her own robes a little as she checked over them quietly. Her thoughts were bright and joyfull... Until she looked up at his face again to see that tight lipped smile... It looked more to her like a grimace. Did her compliment repulse him? Great! Tears sprang unseen to the corners of her eyes. But she couldn't let him see that. She focused for another moment on her robes, eyes downcast. She had only casted the barest glimpse at his face. She had the feeling quickly beaten and had that shy smile back in place, and as she looked up, she brushed a strand of that brightly colored hair back. "A little warm in here..." She commented softly as she fluttered her robes a little to illustrate her point. And thus came the chatting. That was one thing about Nessa... When nervous she would chat away. And chat away she did. Jennessa smiled to him, batting her eyes a little as she did. And yet as nervous as she was, she wasn't slipping into the mindless prattle. She was actually talking about things she was passionate about. Charms was her most beloved class. It was very possible that she could talk right over him if he tried to speak. Then again maybe not... Who knew? She smiled sweetly as her words soon drifted off. Yet as she looked up again, thinking he would have his eyes glazed over with boredom... And yet her first look showed only bright eyes fixated on her! Not even looking to his half finished work or the cat sleeping on the chair or anything. As she met his gaze, she looked away, talking animatedly, before looking again, her eyes brightening further and her voice inflections getting more animated with her face as her hopes lifted again. While she was talking, she shifted her chair closer, and closer, until she sat right behind Elspeth's chair. Goodness that had to be an amusement to Vane. For Jennessa wasn't even trying to hide the emotion in her face and mannerisms now. At his word, her words drifted off, she turned quitely pink as she realized she had moved closer to him. She bit her lip gently. but as he spoke, her attention was upon him. The smile soon returned as she listened to his words, the same attention and interest in her eyes. She nodded a little and looked at the time, wincing just a little bit. "You're probably right... I bet the Hufflepuff common room is full too. And I really don't feel like talking with any of them right now..." She looked up at him, an odd meaningfulness in her eyes. It had greatly confused her that he didn't dismiss her imediately... But he gave her a chance... Sort of. She almost threw away that chance... And she couldn't believe it. But he didn't let her? He called her back... And now his next words made her smile sheepishly before speaking again in a shy manner. One more time... One more time tonight she would put her heart on the line and see if he'd brush it away... Ok so maybe she was being dramatic... But she'd ask anyway. That voice was soft... Gentle... Vulnerable... But it would come forth, question audible and certain. "Come out to the lake with me?" Her eyes fixed upon him as she asked the question. "I mean we could just show up there seperately if you want... And I know it's kind of chilly, maybe you'd like to grab a jacket. And I need to put my books away..." She glanced off, not knowing what to expect him to say, she had started rambling again, and hopefully he interrupted her somewhere in the middle of it. She didn't move away from him but at this point she was leaning some toward him, though not close enough to be too awkward. But she wouldn't look up at him until he would speak again. Vane wouldn't have believed the current situation was happening, or ever would for that matter, if it hadn't been actually happening. He never would have guessed that the one he wanted to cure his boredom would be a chipper, chatty little thing like Jennessa. Usually, Vane stuck with the "shallow, self centered, trophy girlfriend". One that looked good on his arm or in his bed, but wasn't good for much else. Why, he chose to date and mingle with girls of that fashion, he had no idea, but he did, and they bored the living daylights out of him. But, Jennessa, she wasn't what one could call "boring", she was...captivating? Well, whatever she was, it didn't much matter right then, she was doing a perfect job of keeping the wizard's attention with the way in which she spoke.
It was quite entertaining really. Jennessa's eyes brightened the longer she spoke, and it was plain as the nose on Vane's face that she adored Charms. While he couldn't blame her for enjoying such an interesting subject, he also wouldn't have gone so far as to actually acted like he really was into the subject, but, he reckoned that's how one acted when they found something so agreeable to them as Quidditch was to him. If that had been the case, and they were discussing Quidditch, it might not have been only Jennessa practically bouncing in their seat, for Vane adored the wizarding sport.
Before he knew it, she was sitting quite close, and he could see exactly how remarkable her blue eyes were, it was like staring into warm tropical waters. He actually noted the lighter flecks of color in her eyes, and made a mental note of how much it made him think of sunlight hitting the tops of rolling waves. Again, he could feel his cheeks warming, but not of anything other than sheer pleasure, as Jennessa made him feel much like there were old friends. It was quite strange to be honest, but he didn't much mind anymore that someone of either House could pop their head in and spot the two hunched close together as they chatted away. Even the thought of possible rumors didn't quite make him squirm, at least not until she suggested Vane meet her at the lake.
His light brows shot up in surprise as he coughed, trying to cover up the emotion. Merlin, she was a bold little thing. As a general rule, these two, were not really supposed to even be conversing let alone making plans to spend more time together, so should he take her up on the offer? On the pretext of reaching for his Charms work, Vane took the half second to think it over, and really didn't see the point of refusing. It was the distraction he was hoping for, and with the high chance of her not actually being the cure for his doldrums, he could always resort to hexing her.
With parchment in hand, Vane's head bobbed lightly in agreement, and he accepted. "That I can do." He flashed another quick smile, flicking his eyes from his lessons to the witch. "I'll just drop of my bag as well, then catch up with you?"
((Not a problem. =] It's fun! Thanks for putting up with me.))

Vane wouldn't believe it... Hah! This was beyond anything Nessa ever dreamed of! Of course it perplexed her beyond belief... Considering she went after Slytherins for the reason they wouldn't accept her... And yet she moved fast tonight, moving and speaking before she allowed herself to think about what was being said and done. Jennessa didn't typically spend much time with the somber quiet Slytherins... They were typically mean to her and she ran off before she could get too hurt. That was her typical habit. She didn't have boyfriends... Sure she had a few friends who were boys, she was friendly and playful with all. Gentle and sweet she was, but she had a sparking spunkiness to her as well. But she seemed to be just the thing to repulse the snakes. But Vane... He was quiet yes... But as far as she could see he held no meanness... And further she didn't feel too shy about talking to Vane about something that mattered to her... No silly flighty mindless prattle... At least not at the moment. Jennessa smiled brightly as she spoke, half hoping he would want to talk to her as she talked to him. She didn't mind listening... She enjoyed talking, but she also loved to listen. Now... If he spoke of Quidditch she would listen, but likely with fearfull eyes. Nessa didn't truly fear much, but heights and flying was one thing she did fear beyond all else. And you had to be up high and flying when playing Quidditch. But she'd talk it all the same if he wanted. Those bright blue eyes did sparkle indeed, widening and fluttering a bit with her speech. And yet as much as her eyes sparkled and carried on, her gaze and attention was drawn to his eyes... Steady and unwavering on her... Crystal blue like a calm serene lake. Tiny ripples could be seen as something she said caught her interest, but they settled her spirit. They tamed the butterflies a little, they still flitted, but now they had more rhyme and reason to their patterns. Jennessa was utterly drawn into this interaction, her work forgotten, appearances forgotten... Everything but him and her forgotten to the little Hufflepuff. But it was then... When she made that rash decision to ask him about meeting her at the lake... It was then that her certainty wavered. Her resolve was slightly shaken. What if he refused her? What if he only ridiculed her? What if? What if? What if? She saw his brows shoot up, but that was the last thing on his face that she saw before she dropped her gaze like a hot potato. She couldn't bear to watch the decision mulling around behind his eyes. She didn't move away from him, but didn't look at him either for many a moment. She knew it wasn't normal... Probably wasn't even right... And yet she wanted to do it anyway... If he was willing. Movement caught her eyes as he took his parchment in hand, but she still wouldn't raise her eyes. That was until he spoke. His first words, his tone not being outraged or disgusted, brought her eyes to his again. And to see the bob of that head, and his affirming words! It felt as if her heart would burst from her chest for real! Oh were she a pup her tail would be just a-wagging and her whole form a-trembling. As it were jitters shot through her slight frame and she grinned brightly to him. She had to bite back silly exclamations or squeels, and she nodded quickly. "Oh that sounds great to me. I'll meet you out there? She nodded hopefully before glancing to the door and sliding back toward the other table, standing to gracefully scoop up her things. "I'll just check out these books, and I'll see you soon." Her words were soft, her tone controlled as she looked again to the door. Goodness she was going to run all the way to her dorms, and out again... If she could she would fly! Tonight... Was going to be a good night. (<3 <3 <3 Putting up with you? Well if you didn't make it so easy it might be hard Alright, you feel like making the thread? Or do you want to post here again and I will?)

Vane wasn't certain, but he thought he saw Jennessa shiver a bit when he accepted her invitation to sit by the lake, and his head tilted as he dragged his eyes over her after he got passed her dazzling smile. Was she cold? She couldn't have been, for she mentioned only moments ago that the library was warm. Then, why the shiver? Hmm... Perhaps she was rethinking her offer and was trying to build up the courage to tell him as such. But then again, why did it really matter? She was a worthless Badger, and really didn't deserve his company anyway. Maybe he would just not show if she did, and see how she liked that.
"Mmhmm...", he replied, pushing himself up from his seat and standing before moving to the other side of the table where his school bag was laying on the floor. He hitched the bag's strap over his shoulder, took notice of the mentioned books, and nodded again. "Right. Then, I'll see you there." Vane's words held no tone to give the witch any hope, but they didn't exactly come out cold either as he edged away from the table to make his exit, and decide if he actually was going to show up lakeside.
((go right ahead if it's no trouble.))
