Name of Storyline: Serpentine Black Part 1 - Draco's Final Task
Timescale: The last 2 weeks (not played on the boards) and this following week (28th June, ending approx 6th July)
Characters directly involved: Draco, Ophelia, Blake Rosier, Snape, McGonagall, Prof Hauner, Lucius Malfoy
Characters who know about the details of the task: Strictly only Lucius, Narcissa, Bellatrix and all of the above except for McGonagall and Hauner.
Background
In his young adult days, Salazar Slytherin's discovery of a ancient Dark Magic Potion and Spell Book belonging to someone who called themselves Serpentine Black (presumably an ancestor of the current Black family) who designed a potion made from Basilisk's poison and Black's family blood, mixed in with various other ingredients. The potion enabled a deep dark magic that bound all of the drinkers into a silent vow and its effects can be manipulated by various methods of preparation. Salazar added to the methods and ingredients and hid a vial of his own blood to activate his version of the Curse, only writing the location of it in the book. Lord Voldemort had learnt about the book and the vial while he was known as Tom Riddle and the desire to find the items and use the curse on his own followers has grown stronger over the years.
Since all belongings of the founders of Hogwarts are due to be protected by the Headmaster/headmistress of Hogwarts as part of their duty, Dumbledore was extremely efficent in keeping this book, the vial of blood and many other important items in hiding. However, the shock of Dumbledore's death resulted in a weakness in protection until duty was passed over to Minerva McGonagall. Severus Snape began searching for the book and vial, knowing they were something Lord Voldemort was searching for - taking advantage of the weakened protection. He found the book's location but was immediately hindered when McGonagall was made the Headmistress of Hogwarts - therefore re-establishing the protection of the item and could not retrieve it.
Plot outine:
Recently, McGonagall has been doubting her position as Headmistress, finding the pressure a lot to bear and has considered stepping down. This doubt and flagging confidence has led to all protective magic being weakened slightly and Voldemort is using his followers to break her down completely (or even better, killed) so that she steps away from her post and leaves the book and the items exposed for the taking once again.
As you all know, Draco is on his final task. His task was to retrieve the items that are being protected. This is a dangerous job because failure is not an option this time. The book is disguised amongst Muggle books (but invisible to Muggles) in a library in Ireland. (Trinity College Library, Dublin www.tcd.ie/Library/) This is why Ophelia Fuilteach was recently recruited as a Death Eater - her home town is very near the location of the book and Voldemort saw this as an advantage, since she is likely to know the area well and her dark mind is easily manipulated. Draco's task was to stay near the location of the book until he had word of the weakest point in McGonagall's state, which was to be aided by Severus Snape and various propaganda. Once McGonagall steps down from her position, Draco must work quickly, with Ophelia's help, to break into the protective forces that keep the book in it's hidden location. Once the book is retrieved, the location of the vial of Salazar's blood can be looked up, and that is the next part of Draco's task.
Blake Rosier is also helping on this task, he is acting as a messenger to and from the Death Eaters, Snape and Draco and Ophelia and back to report on progress to Voldemort.
Blake is also able to come to the manor to speak to Lucius and Narcissa about Draco's progress and to ensure no one speaks of the tasks incase information is leaked.
Meanwhile, the Order suspects something is going on and they are keeping a close eye on McGonagall's state as she is acting rather odd. She arrives at Grimmauld Place to tell them that she feels she is no longer capable of the position of Headmistress and wants to step down as she wanted to a while back. Snape, upon hearing of the news at an Emergency Meeting at Grimmauld Place, then is able to send the message via Blake to Draco to go ahead with the plan.
Sub plot:
Meanwhile, Professor Hauner has heard of McGonagall's flailing confidence and as a great supporter of Lucius Malfoy, is keen to get in contact with him to ask him to take advantage and convince him move into a head position at Hogwarts. Whether Lucius is interested or not is up to him. However, he feels the need to go through Pansy as he is slightly intimidated by the Malfoy family and would no be sure of approaching Lucius directly and he has been friends with the Parkinson family for a long time. Hauner also wishes to become a valuable source of information for Lucius regarding goings-on within Hogwarts.
