There are quite a number of jobs and roles available within the Wizarding World.
Below I will give a brief detail of some of them to give you an idea of what you can have your character become.
Student
Not an occupation, but every wizard/ witch has to start somewhere. Students are sorted into the houses in relation to an aspect their personality.
Generally it is something like:
Gryffindor: Noble, Heroic, Chivalrous
Slytherin: Cunning, Wily, Power hungry, Ambitious, Generally pure blood
Ravenclaw: Intelligent, Clever
Hufflepuff: Hard working, Patient, Friendly, A sense of fair play
Teacher
Teachers are experts in their fields, to the extent that they can teach others their skills and assist them in passing their exams.
Being an expert in a subject generally means that they are less than expert in other subjects although there may be some exceptions. E.g. Dumbledore.
Ministry Worker
There are a lot of roles within the Ministry:
Department of Transport
Department of Magical Games and Sports
Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes
Department of International Magical Cooperation
Obliviator
among others including
Law Enforcement
All within the Ministry, the Law Enforcement keep order in the wizarding world. There are a number of departments.
Law Enforcers
The main team, these are the wizards and witches who run the day to day duties of law enforcement. Equivalent of muggle police.
Auror:
The Aurors are the highly skilled peacekeepers of the wizarding world. They are adept at dueling and have learned many other skills through their rigorous training. They are the Elite of the Law Team. Equivalent to muggle soldiers.
Hitwizards
Working in conjunction with the other law enforcement departments, these wizards and witches are highly trained in offensive and defensive magic. Their duties are to capture or kill dangerous targets, so they have minimal training in other aspects of law enforcement. Equivalent to muggle SWAT teams.
Wizengamot
The High Court of Law. The judges of tried criminals. Chosen by the Minister of Magic.
Healer
Very important people. Without them, damage taken in the various dangerous activities wizards engage in would not be fixed. It stands to reason that their work takes a lot of skill. If just anyone could point a wand at themselves and fix any injury there would be no need for them.
Journalist
The people of the world need to be kept up to date on affairs, so the journalists are on hand with their quills to make sure that no details are left out. Or if they are, then they make stuff up to fill
the gaps.
Shopkeeper
The various stores in Diagon Alley and elsewhere need to be tended to. A lot of work goes into stock taking and keeping the stores.
Barkeeps
Be they owners or bar staff, the friendly (or otherwise) faces of the wizard bars socialise with and serve anyone who enters their place of work. Although they do have the right to refuse.
Handmaiden
Lucius Malfoy hires handmaidens at his manor for various tasks. He advertises openings when he requires new ones. Other well off wizards may do the same.
Death Eater
The followers of Voldemort. Dangerous wizards and witches ready to kill anyone who stands against them. On their arm they have a tattoo like Dark Mark which their Lord contacts them through.
They come in various ranks:
Superior: The Dark Lords inner circle. They are powerful and to be feared and respected almost as much as the Lord himself.
Death Eater (regular): The bulk of the force.
Apprentice: A student of the dark arts learning under a Death Eater or Superior awaiting the day that they are fully accepted into the ranks in their own right. Not all of these have Dark Marks. To become an apprentice you must find a Death Eater willing to train you. Once taken in to training they will bring you before the Dark Lord when they deem you ready and worthy to meet him.
