From time to time on the site we have a problem with god moding.
God moding is generally when someone plays their character as invincible or all powerful but can also mean other things too. All characters have weaknesses, and this should be thought about when roleplaying. It also makes things more fun for everyone involved. Being unstoppable is quite boring as well as just plain annoying.
---------------------
Here a few definitions of what counts as god moding:
> Being invincible.
> Knowing everything.
> When not knowing something, being able to guess correctly with no real logic.
> Having the power to do anything.
> Always turning up at the right place and the right time.
> Posting other peoples reactions. (You are only in control of your character and therefore should allow others to do as they wish with theirs.)
> Killing or injuring another character without their permission.
> Not being hit by attacks or dodging/ reflecting everything that comes their way.
> Making out that their opponent is weaker than them, when the profiles state differently.
> Ignoring what others have posted to suit your own needs.
> Conveniently having previously placed some form of protection on yourself, someone or something when threatened despite never mentioning it before.
> Taking someone elses descriptive writing and assuming that your character knows exactly what the other is thinking.
> Either having or being able to easily find an object that is needed with no previous explanation.
> Saying that you previously arranged or did something to conveniently get yourself out of a difficult situation, without actually having RP'd it.
> Making up spells, laws, rules, potions or characters etc that have no basis in or conflict with canon without prior permission from admin.

Below are examples of what kind of role play is regarded as god moding. In each case Snape is the non god moding player:
---------------------POWER PLAY
Snape posts:
*Filled with rage at his opponent, he realises that the time for sportmanship is over.*
Crucio!
Greyback posts
*Barely feels the weaklings spell as it hits him and laughs it off.*
*When Snape releases his attack from him, he growls and pounces four foot in the air before landing with his teeth sunk deep into Snapes neck.*
---------------------POWER PLAY AND WRITING RESPONSE
Snape posts:
*This tournament duel has been long awaited and Snape is now ready to face his final opponent. Everything rides on this battle.*
*He bows in respect to his combatant, before taking a step back and swishing his wand.*
Confringo!
Mad Eye posts
*Quick as a flash withdraws his wand and blocks the attack with ease.*
*He reflects it at Snape who is hit drastically on the neck.*
*He watches as Snape falls to his knees and begins to choke from the powerful force.*
*He smiles as he realises he has won with the minimal effort against someone he would expect to do much better.*
---------------------ILLOGICAL KNOWING OR GUESSING
LeStrange posts in Diagon Alley:
Bellatrix LeStrange posts
*She is hunting the traitor Snape, believing him to be a spy for the Ministry within the Dark Lords ranks.*
Snape posts in Hogsmeade:
Snape posts:
*He travels through Hogsmeade, partly for a quiet walk to collect his thoughts, and partly to keep an eye on his students.*
Bellatrix posts
*She has a sudden premonition that she needs to be in Hogsmeade. Somehow she feels that her hunt will be more successful here. She apparates there immediately. There just as she suspected was Snape, standing before her.*
---------------------IGNORING POSTER
Remus Lupin posts
*He had hunted Snape all this time. He was after his revenge, his wolf blood and senses leading him all the way. Finally he found him.*
Snape posts:
*He remains calm at Lupins approach. They had never really been friends and he knew that this was inevitable.*
*Keeping eye contact with the man, and a straight face, emotions controlled, he slyly slipped his wand into his hand, making sure that Lupin did not notice any hint of his movement. He spoke to keep his opponents focus on his face.*
Greetings Remus.
Lupin posts
*He moves closer to Snape, teeth bared, he could feel a transformation coming on.*
Put away your wand Snape! I am here for your blood and you can not stop me!
---------------------CONVENIENT POSSESSION
Augustus Rookwood posts
*It was unusual for Snape to invite him to his home, but it seemed as though Snape had important Death Eater business to discuss. He settled down at the table and bowed his head in greeting.*
Snape posts:
*He pours the wine, secretly slipping poison into Rookwoods glass.*
Here Augustus, have a drink.
Rookwood posts
My thanks, old friend.
*He drinks the wine and savours the flavour.*
*He begins to choke and gag, grasping his throat as he struggles for breath. Fortunately, he had some anti-dote in his pocket which he managed to fumble into his mouth, allowing him to breathe easy once more.*

At Malfoy Mansion we are taking steps to stop god moding from happening. Our decrees state that no player should god mode, and if they do should expect their posts to be edited by admin.
We have implemented a stats system here as well in order to further clarify peoples powers in relation to others.
---------------------
CHARACTER LIMITATIONS
Of course, as the bulk of the characters here are wizards or witches and therefore capable of almost any magic, you must keep in mind that even they have limitations.
Whether this be their strength or magical ability, please keep them in mind. It makes for a much more realistic environment. (Realistic used in the loosest sense of the word.)
Here are a few things that all characters should remember. Forgetting them could well count as godmoding:
1. Speaking the name Voldemort is taboo. If you say it, then he will know where you are and be able to find you or speak to your mind if he wishes.
2. No one can enter Azkaban without a Dark Mark, unless escorted by someone with one.
3. If you are looking for someone, posting in the next thread you see them post in is unrealistic. Unless say for example your character owns a shop on Diagon Alley, and the person you are looking for posts in Diagon Alley. Then it could be perfectly reasonable for you to bump into them. But if you live and work in London, but the person posts in Hogsmeade, then you have no reason to be there. Your best bet is to do a bit of detective work in character and actually play out hunting them. Surely that would be more fun anyway.
Either way, it is advised that you ask permission from players via PM if you wish to RP with them.
4. Hogwarts Headmasters office is only accessible by Snape. He must be there to allow anyone else entry.
