As per our rules and decrees, such things as God Moding, Mary Sue characters and unfair play are simply not allowed.
When creating your character try to keep in mind that everyone, even wizards and witches have limitations. We want to keep the site realistic and canon as possible to ensure fair play and to make sure that everyone can enjoy it.
Even the most powerful wizards have their weaknesses.
This is a guide to the sort of powers and abilities that characters could have. Please follow it when building your profile. Admin may allow exceptions if they feel that there is suitable reason.
They are all very rare abilities, so be warned that we are likely to refuse if you ask for too many. Depending on what type of character you have, you may be limited to one.
Advanced/Specialist Magic
Only high ranking, highly skilled or expert wizards and witches (with a couple of exceptions) will have these powers. For example, Aurors, Superior Death Eaters and so on.
If your character fits this type of role, please choose only two of these powers/skills at the very most. In some cases, even that may be excessive.
Master of Charms and Duelling
These magics are different to each other, so being extremely talented at both at the same time would require extensive training. Most people would be good at one and therefore be lacking in the other.
Though as they are both commonly used, it is reasonable for someone to be average at both.
Occlumens
The power to defend yourself from having your mind read. Must have been trained by a Master of the Art.
A Class in Occlumens
Legilimens
The power to read minds. As with Occlumens, you must have been specially trained.
A Lesson in Legilimens
Master of Potions
Potions is an extremely technical skill, and requires a lot of knowledge. We need to be satisfied that you actually know enough about potions to call your character a Master.
Animagus
The ability to change into an animal at will. It is always the same animal, and is something, like the Patronus, which reflects personality not their favourite creature. This is not something that can be learned. It is something people are born with.
Metamorphmagus
The ability to change physical appearance at will, without the use of the Polyjuice Potion. Again this is a born with trait and can not be learned.
Parselmouth
The ability to speak with and understand snakes.
Flight
Very few wizards are able to fly without the use of a broomstick or other enchanted object. It stands to reason that only few are able to enchant objects to have this power.
Seer
The ability to see or predict the future is extremely rare, and even though Divination is taught in schools, there are many that believe the ability to be a myth.
Magical Resistance
The ability to ignore the effects of certain magic. Usually this is reserved to the likes of giants and dragons. Even so, when a large amount of spells are fired at someone with resistance simultaneously, they will eventually succumb.
Imperius Curse Resistance
The ability to resist the control of the Unforgivable Imperius Curse. It would help to have special training in this. Though no one is able to successfully defend against it without having suffered from the curse first hand.
Priori Incantatem
A spell which when cast on a wand, will show a vision in ghost like form of the last spell cast by the target wand.
The incantation is 'Prior Incantato', and the image can be dispelled with 'Deletrius'.
This is powerful magic that is difficult to learn.
Invisibility
The ability to turn oneself invisible without the use of a charmed cloak or a potion is so very very rare that we are likely to refuse this to everyone.
-----------
Non Magical Strengths
God moding and particularly Mary Sue can go further than abilities. We are likely to ask you to change things if you have too many of the following traits too.
Wealth
Having endless amounts of money and being able to pay for anything without caring gets boring and pointless when everyone can do it.
Rank
Being in a position to boss other people about is something that is earned.
Good looks
If you're not rich, then maybe you can get by on your looks, but it's a pain when someone has it all.
Popularity
Everyone likes you, you charming old sort.
Youth
Nothing wrong with it on it's own, but coupled with things such as wealth and rank, it starts getting unbelievable.
Bravery
Not everybody is a hero. Most people will freeze when faced with danger.
Natural Talent/Genius
Especially in a number of skills. If your character does have a natural talent for something, it would probably mean they are less talented elsewhere.
Werewolf/Veela/Vampire etc
Being one of these magical creatures or having one in the family could lead to having one or more of these other traits, and might be seen as a sneaky way of tricking us into letting you have a Mary Sue.
