Having trouble figuring out what type of wand your character should have?
Well remember that you don't choose the wand, the wand chooses you!
But anyway, here are some tips on what you can put together.
Wands are a representation of your character and their personality. So you should keep that in mind.
"When his wand's oak and hers is holly, then to marry would be folly."
"Rowan gossips, chestnut drones, ash is stubborn, hazel moans"
"Wands of elder,never prosper"
Length
Wands vary according to length, from at least 7" to 16", as well as rigidity, ranging from "springy" to "unyielding".
The longest known wand once belonged to Rubeus Hagrid, made of oak with a length of sixteen inches. The shortest known wand belonged to Dolores Umbridge.
There may also be some correlation between wizards height and the lengths of their wands. Hagrid, who is a half-giant, has a very long wand, and Dolores Umbridge, who is described as being squat and toad-like, has a very short, stubby wand.
Core
Magical cores enhance the wand magic or give the wand-wood magical abilities.
The only cores able to produce magic are from magical species.
Mr. Ollivander opts to only use phoenix feathers, unicorn hairs, and dragon heartstrings, which may be the most powerful and best of magical cores, as Ollivander's wands have been praised for being the best.
Other materials, such as Veela hair, or even Thestral hair, have also been used by other wandmakers.
A characters talents may reflect the core of their wand, i.e. a dragon core may be skilled in fire magic.
Some more examples:
• Phoenix Feather – Very Magical.
• Dragon Heartstring – Hexes are a specialty of this core.
• Unicorn Tail – Best for the pure of heart.
• Leprechaun Hair – Somewhat temperamental to Non-Irish.
• Demiguise Hair – Only the best for Transfiguration.
• Hippogriff Talon – Excellent for Charm Work.
• Runespoor Fang – Best for those who deal with Dark Magic.
• Hair from the Mane of a Kelpie – Superb for all spells.
• Chimaera Scale – Very rare, yet very powerful.
• Ashwinder Ash – Casts the best protection charms.
