Roger watched in amazement at the ghostly peacock form as it danced about. He pulled out his wand, pointed it outward and casually spoke "Expecto Patronum." Unsurprising, nothing happened at all.
Roger looked over at Fleur with an embarrassed look on his face. "Let me try that again, it has been awhile" he said as he tried to salvage some of his pride.
Again he pointed his wand and said "Expecto Patronum", this time with a little more feeling. Again nothing happened. Annoyed, he again said "Expecto Patronum", this time with some anger in his voice at not being able to cast the spell correctly.

Fleur simply watched as Roger struggled with the spell, a disappointed look on her face. She let him continue, but after his third try and hearing the anger in his voice, she stopped him.
"I can see we are going to 'ave to work on zis for a while Roger" she said to him with a touch of disappointment in her voice. "First, you 'ave to draw circles weeth your wand to power up ze spell. Like zis" she said as she demonstrated. "'Ere, let me 'elp you." She walked over to him and stood closely behind him and took his hand and pointed it outward before drawing circles in the air. "Like zat" she said.

Roger was frustrated at not being able to cast the spell. However his frustration soon turned to worry as Fleur approached him and took his hand. He knew he would be unable to concentrate with her holding his hand. A flood of memories from the Yule Ball clouded his mind and he was unable to focus on anything else. He tried desperately to keep his focus but he couldn't. He tried to say the incantation for the spell as she circled his hand but he quickly forgot it even though he spoke it not less than a minute ago.

Fleur let go of Roger's hand and stepped back away from him. "Try eet now Roger" she told him, a hint of encouragement in her voice. "Don't worry eef you can not do eet at first, ze charm takes a lot of practice, and you 'ave to focus on your 'appiest memory."

"I'll try" Roger said, even though his thoughts were still clouded by the memories from the Yule Ball. He pointed his wand out in front of him and circled it like how Fleur showed him, tried to concentrated on when he became the captain of the Ravenclaw quidditch team, and shouted "Expecto Patronum", even though he didn't expect much to happen.
Much to his surprise however, something shot out from his wand. He could not tell what it looked like exactly. It just appeared to be a white mist in no particular form. As quickly as it appeared however, it disappeared. He turned to Fleur, still in shock at what happened. "I didn't expect that" he told her.

Fleur was surprised just as much as Roger seemed to be at what just happened. Excited, she said "Zat was a good try! You just 'ave to focus a leetle beet more. Try eet again!" She hoped to encourage him more. It would take another try or two but she was sure Roger would be able to do the charm in no time.

Roger took a deep breath and cleared his thoughts. Again he concentrated on the day he became the captain of the Ravenclaw quidditch team. Again he performed the motions to cast the charm and again he shouted "expectro patronum" He expected something to happen, but nothing did. He tried to cast the charm again a second time and a third time. After the third try when nothing happened he turned to Fleur in frustration and asked her "What is wrong? Why won't it work?"

"Eet takes time and practice Roger, to master ze spell" Fleur told him and hoped to sound reassuring. The spell was tricky for even herself to cast. "You need to focus more, and need more practice, I even 'ad a 'ard time learning ze spell. Not everyone can even cast eet. But weeth what 'appened before I am sure you will eventually be able to summon a patronus."

Roger went back to trying to cast the spell. Even after all day, only stopping for lunch and dinner, he still could not do it. He didn't know if he could not cast the spell due to his lack of practice or the fact that Fleur was teaching him. He could never concentrate around her and her teaching methods didn't help either. He knew Fleur to be overly critical and bluntly honest but it never bothered him before, mostly because he was never on the receiving end of it. This time he was and he was quite annoyed by her, and more than once he thought of asking her to leave so he could practice alone. It was after dinner when Roger finally decided to quit. "I've had enough, I'll never be able to summon a patronus. I guess I am not as good a wizard as I thought I was" he said as he put away his wand in frustration.

Fleur simply watched and tried her best to encourage and teach Roger how to perform the spell. She always knew the teaching at Hogwarts was not up to par with that of Beauxbatons but she knew Roger was a talented wizard and would be able to cast the charm with a little practice. She knew Roger was frustrated but she continued to teach him and point out what he was doing wrong. Sometimes he would circle his wand too slow, sometimes too fast. Sometimes he would pronounce the incantation wrong. But Fleur would not give up on teaching him. Learning the patronus charm was too important in times such as these and the spell could save his life, that alone gave her the patience to continue to teach him. It was also a spell he must be able to cast if he was to join the Order. However Fleur still had doubts about inviting him into the Order, even if there was an Order left.
Fleur was crestfallen as Roger put his wand away and gave up. She approached him and put her hand on his shoulder and rubbed gently to try and encourage him. "Just try eet one more time, please? she asked him.

Roger really was not in the mood to continue, he thought about making a mock effort just to quiet Fleur. As Fleur rubbed his shoulder hi mind became flooded be memories of them at the Yule Ball, there was no way he could focus now. Suddenly it hit him, why the charm did not work. His happiest memory was not the day he became captain of the Ravenclaw quidditch team. His happiest memories was the time he spent with Fleur at the Yule Ball. He pulled his wand back out and pointed it outward. Instead of trying to block the memories of the Yule Ball, he fully embraced them. He thought of how he made a fool of himself at dinner. He thought of how Fleur and he opened the ball when they danced together. He thought of their intimate moments in the rose bushes and in her personal chambers. While he though of all that, he shouted "Expecto Patronum!" A brilliant flash of white light erupted from his wand, so bright he was blinded by it. When his eyes finally adjusted he saw it. A bright shimmering form in the shape of an eagle.

Fleur's face lit up in excitement as Roger successfully cast the spell. " I knew you could do eet Roger! You just cast one of ze most advanced spells! Most wizards could nevair cast ze charm een zeir life!" After that she let go of his body, took his face in her hands and pressed her lips to his for a fraction of a second before she quickly pulled back.

Roger simply stared in amazement at his shimmering eagle patronus as Fleur hugged him. "It is all thanks to you Fleur for teaching me. You are a great teacher. McGonagall knew what she was doing when she hired you for Hogwarts." When Fleur kissed him, Roger was completely shocked and caught off guard however. Even if it was only a friendly peck, he could feel the burning sensation spread from his lips to every inch of his body, and he felt he needed a cold shower to cool off.

"I theenk zat eez enough for today Roger. Later I well teach you 'ow you can communicate weeth a patronus. You can add your voice to a patronus to send a message. Only Order members know 'ow to do zat. But we will worry about zat later after you have mastered ze spell. Zere are no Dementors around, and summoning a patronus een zere presence eez much more difficult" Fleur explained.
Even though Roger did summon his first patronus, there was still much Fleur needed to teach him.

Roger nodded his head in agreement at what Fleur said. "Good idea, it is getting late and I have quidditch practice tomorrow. I have to study for a bit and get some sleep" he said. It was very important that he did so, a chaser position might be opening up on the Magpie's pro team permanently. Becoming a full time quidditch player for a pro team was his dream.
